If you're like me, you love Halloween! It's the time of year that signals fall, cooler weather (If you live in Texas that's a good thing lol), and if you're in college it means mid-terms are over and the holidays are right around the corner. When I was a little girl, I couldn't wait to wear my Halloween costume. It's only a 24 hour holiday, so I would put on my costume when I woke up and was hardly ready to take it off at the end of the night. I remember my costume choices as being versatile and mostly I remember being unafraid to be anything I wanted. My genres went from princess to Winnie the pooh to witch to fairy...I was all over the place and I never thought about the fact that someone else might think I was lame or that I would be judged for my choice. It was a little adventure for me, which is what made Halloween so fun!
Fast forward to middle school. I found my choices were measured by my peers. I no longer had the confidence to rock MY choice. I just wanted to blend in and be accepted, a far cry from my 6 year old self. The media plays a large role when it comes to shaping trends and most girls are not brave enough to step out of the norm and celebrate their own ideas and imagination. As I look back, I realize more than ever the importance of confidence. Our choices and actions are a part of our voice that is often judged by others. Don't let anyone silence your voice, whether it's vocally or by actions.
Stay safe this Halloween. Stay with a group of friends, it's more fun anyway, AND sticking together helps avoid any risky situations. Social media alert!! Take fun pics and post but avoid posting your location, this gives any predators the green light to take advantage. I'm not trying to scare you, but it's really the best practice when it comes to posting online. My best advice is to enjoy Halloween with your friends, family and siblings without the distraction of Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook. Post your fun pics the day AFTER Halloween. It's my secret way of extending the holiday just a little longer.
